Abstract

This paper examines King Josiah’s reforms (2 Chronicles 34:1–13) and their contemporary relevance for empowering Nigerian youth to drive 21st-century political and socio-economic transformation. With over 60% of Nigeria’s population under 30, young people are central to addressing national development challenges, yet they face persistent obstacles such as unemployment, poverty, and limited access to education and healthcare. Drawing parallels between Josiah’s leadership and Nigeria’s context, the paper advocates youth empowerment as a foundation for national development. It highlights Josiah’s leadership qualities—youthful courage, commitment to truth, and determination to reform society—as a model for Nigerian youth. His early assumption of responsibility demonstrates that integrity and vision transcend age, inspiring young Nigerians to overcome apathy and corruption in shaping the nation’s future. By linking Josiah’s reforms to Nigeria’s socio-political realities, the paper emphasizes youth leadership grounded in moral conviction, social responsibility, and national transformation. Using a mixed-methods approach, including a survey of 500 Nigerian youth and interviews with 50 key stakeholders, the findings stress the need for policy-makers and stakeholders to provide adequate support and resources for youth participation in politics and socio-economic development. The study concludes that empowering Nigerian youth politically, socially, and economically is essential for sustainable development, transformation, and breaking cycles of poverty and inequality. Nigeria’s path to sustainable development therefore requires intentional investment in youth through leadership training, entrepreneurial support, equitable access to education and employment, and active political engagement, positioning them as key agents of national transformation.
